Lower key stage 2 – year 4

  1. By the beginning of year 4, pupils should be able to read books accurately and at a speed that is sufficient for them to focus on understanding what they read rather than on decoding individual words.
  2. As their decoding skills become increasingly secure, pupils will be taught to start focusing more towards developing their vocabulary and their reading, making sure that they become independent, fluent and enthusiastic readers who read widely and frequently.
  3. Pupils are also taught in our our books how to improve their understanding and enjoyment of stories, poetry, plays and non-fiction, and learning to read silently.
  4. Pupils are also made to develop their knowledge and skills in reading a wide range of non-fiction.
  5. Pupils are also taught to be able to write down their ideas after reading fictions, with a reasonable degree of accuracy and with good sentence punctuation.
