Key stage 1 – year 1


  1. During year 1, pupils will learn how to sound and blend unfamiliar printed words quickly and accurately using the phonic knowledge and skills that they have already learnt.
  2. Alongside the knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs), pupils will learn to develop the skill of blending the sounds into words for reading and establish the habit of applying this skill whenever they encounter new words.
  3. Pupils’ writing during year 1 will learn how they can encode the sounds they hear in words (spelling skills), to develop the physical skill needed for handwriting, and learn how to organise their ideas in writing.
  4. Pupils will learn to apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words
  5. Pupils will learn to spell words containing each of the 40+ phonemes
  6. Pupils will learn to name the letters of the alphabet in order
  7. Pupils will learn to read alongside learning spelling of words
  8. Pupils will learn to form words starting with uppercase letters and ending in lowercase, and form digits 0-9
